West building
Remnants of medieval walls can be seen in the ground between the entrances to the great hall and the chapel. The walls separated the bailey from the western part of the complex and created a refuge for the archbishop and high-ranking guests. If one looks from the western terrace in the direction of the lower fortress’s inner courtyard, one can see a wall excavation from the 1980s on the left in the enclosing wall of the upper fortress. During the excavation, pieces of the wall fell down into the lower fortress. It became apparent that a 12th-century tower stood on the site.
This was shown by two 19th-century drawings, though it could not be proven until recently.
The pergola, which is visible today, was built in the mid-19th century. Located on the western terrace, it frames a wonderful view into the Saale River Valley.
